4 Ways to Change Your Teeth's Size and Shape

Nov 11, 2022

If you hate your teeth's size or shape, you may avoid smiling in front of others or even avoid social communication altogether. While some people hate their smiles due to missing, stained, crooked, or chipped teeth, oddly shaped teeth can also hurt your appearance.

In addition, these dental issues can affect your ability to maintain proper oral hygiene, increasing the risk of dental diseases. Luckily, most of these issues are fixable, thanks to cosmetic dental procedures.

Below are some cosmetic dental procedures you can use to improve your teeth' shape and size.

1. Tooth Reshaping

Tooth reshaping is a cosmetic procedure that gives patients a better dental appearance. During the procedure, your dentist removes some of your teeth's enamel to shape your teeth as desired. This procedure is only effective at reducing your teeth's size and smoothing teeth with an uneven surface.

If you have surface irregularities due to chipping, your dentist can add resin to fill the gaps, giving your teeth a natural shape. Since the treatment does not require surgical interventions, a dentist can complete it in one day; plus, you don't need healing time.

However, due to the enamel sanding and the resin, you should avoid anything that could increase the risk of cracking and staining. For example, you should not chew hard things.

2. Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are tooth-like caps used to hide teeth flaws. You can think of them as a hat hiding your original teeth below. Your dentist can recommend dental crowns if you have irregularly shaped teeth that you cannot fix with fillings. Most dental crowns are made of ceramic or porcelain, but you can also find some made of metal or resin.

Dentists complete a dental crown placement in as few as two visits: the first visit involves examining the teeth that need crowns and preparing them, and you get the permanent crown on the second visit. The dentist can file some parts if your teeth are too big for the crown. Similarly, if the teeth are too thin or have some parts missing, the dentist can use a filling material to build a perfect tooth structure.

3. Dental Veneers

Like dental crowns, veneers are porcelain or resin attachments that help improve your teeth's appearance. You can use veneers if you have smaller or irregularly shaped teeth due to chipping or breaking. However, unlike crowns that cover your whole tooth, your dentist attaches veneers on the front side of your teeth.

To attach the veneers permanently, your dentist must first reshape your teeth to create a rough surface that allows proper bonding. The last step involves cementing the veneer and hardening the bond using ultraviolet light.

Veneers do not require an extended recovery time, but you should take precautions to prevent damage. For example, you should avoid chewing hard objects and use a mouth guard when playing sports.

4. Cosmetic Bonding

You can choose cosmetic bonding if you have minor appearance issues, like gaps between teeth, short teeth, irregularly shaped teeth, and cracked teeth. The procedure involves adding composite resin to your teeth to get the desired shape or size. Due to the simplicity of the procedure, the dentist can complete it in one appointment.

Thanks to cosmetic dentistry, you don't have to live with a smile you don't like. If you have smile issues due to your teeth's shape or size, consult your dentist about the above procedures to get the five-star smile you have always wanted.
