Eyelash Lifts: An FAQ

When eyelashes are curled, eyes often appear larger and eyelashes longer and fuller. However, many women find that their lashes never retain curl for more than several hours after curling them with a traditional eyelash curler or simply dislike using these eyelash curlers. For this reason, eyelash lifts have become very popular.

For example, after you obtain a lash lift treatment, eyelashes often appear curved or curled for up to eight weeks with no need to continue curling lashes with home devices.

You may have questions about eyelash lifts and how they work. Learn the answers to four frequently asked questions about lash lifts.

1. How Is an Eyelash Lift Performed?

The eyelash lift procedure is relatively simple and easy when performed by a professional and involves a few steps. First, you will lie or sit down in the professional’s office and close your eyes. Next, special silicone pads that double as lash molds go on your upper lids right against your lash line.

Then, your aesthetician lifts your lashes upwards onto the silicone pads and covers them with a solution. This solution both holds them in place and breaks down the lash proteins to begin forming your new lash shape. However, some aestheticians choose to use two products instead of one — one product to secure the lashes to the mold and another to break down lash proteins.

Once your lashes have the lifting solution, you must wait between five and 15 minutes for the solution to set the curl into place. Then, the aesthetician applies a neutralizing solution to lashes and removes the molds.

Some aestheticians choose to follow lash lift services with the application of a special lash conditioner or an optional eyelash tinting solution.

2. Is Lash Lift Aftercare Difficult?

For 24 to 48 hours after obtaining a lash lift, avoid getting your eyelashes wet and skip applying mascara and other beauty products you typically apply to your lashes.

While you can shower or bathe during this time, you should keep water off your face and eyes when bathing. Avoid performing intense exercise and spending too much time outdoors in the heat. These activities could cause you to produce sweat that drips onto your lashes.

After 24 to 48 hours have passed, you can begin applying mascara again, if desired, and getting your eyelashes wet as often as you would like. However, since eyelashes can be more delicate after the lash lift procedure, apply a lash conditioning solution to your lashes daily. Also, avoid waterproof mascaras, which can be especially hard on delicate lashes.

3. Can I Lift and Tint My Eyelashes at Home?

No one should ever lift their eyelashes at home for several reasons. First, the procedure can be extremely difficult to DIY properly. Your eyes must be closed when both performing the lash tint procedure and applying a lash tint.

In addition, while professional-quality lash lift and tint solutions are safe for use by experienced aestheticians, they can cause eye irritation and infection if they accidentally seep into eyes. When you purchase a product not designed for professional use, it may contain ingredients that could potentially cause blindness.

If you love the look of curled eyelashes but dislike curling them every day — especially if the curl has vanished after just a few hours — then consider an eyelash lift service. Optionally, you can tint your lashes after this service to eliminate the need to apply mascara daily as well.
